Environment of the NANGAIKAN
Introducing the features of the structure of the NANGAIKAN

Shinshu Matsumoto NANGAIKAN (Oshima Family Residence) is located in the terrace of the first-grade river Narai River on the left bank, located in the central part of the fertile Matsumotodaira, near the city of Matsumoto, and overlooking the surrounding mountains. It is a comfortable living environment.

* The land is well fertile in terraced areas, making it ideal as agricultural land.
* Due to the terraced area, there is almost no concern about flooding even if the water level increases.
* The geology is probably due to the good quality of the clay, and the ground is solid, and the foundation of the house is enough with a simple bump.

Even after 150 years, simply placing stones on the base does not change the level of the base much.

Structure of NANGAIKAN
Introducing the features of the structure of the

1. Structure of the
NANGAIKAN

he main building of the Shinshu Matsumoto NANGAIKAN was built at the end of the Edo period on February 25, 4th in Ansei 4 in Oyakichi Nijo. It is somewhat larger overall than other main buildings. It is approximately square with a frontage of 9 and a depth of 9 and is said to be 81 tsubo.
The names of the rooms are Upper parlor, Lower seat, Upper floor, Lower floor, Kozashiki, Buddha's room, Sleeping room, Living room, Storage room, Barn, Stable, Book house, etc.
The south side had a wet edge, but was renovated to prevent theft and fire. The large roof was a split roof made of hinoki cypress, but was renovated to a tiled roof after the war because the roof material was too late.
However, the slopes on the riverbank did not meet the gradient, so there was a lot of rain during heavy rains and it was difficult. Then, at the end of 1994, it was repaired again with copper sheeting.
On the other hand, the kitchen and bookstore were modernly renovated due to the progress of water washing and the completion of the sewerage system.
Nevertheless, it is thankful that the authentic main building of the Edo era has maintained a dignified style and historical elegance.

2. Structure of the NANGAIKAN

In particular, the mountain gate of the attached building is wonderful, and even the large door of the mountain gate uses a single keyaki as it is.
Unfortunately, this mountain gate was sold to the Hirabayashi family in the neighboring village in 1938.
The Oshima family crest still remains on that demon tile.
In addition, it has recently been found that both the main building and the mountain gate are masterpieces of Naoshiro Etoshiri, a master of Koshinomiya's Koshiwa Village.
The size of the mansion is about 700 tsubo, the main building of the main building is built in the center, and there is a two-story storehouse with miso storehouse in front of the opening of the mountain gate. On the south side of the western main building, there is a pond with a windy pond that surrounds it, and there are hundreds of years of old trees that seem to have been planted by ancestors. There is a watermill in one corner of the forest, and both impressive children from the Meiji era seemed to look at the rotating rice huller with a wonder.
The east side of the main building is the entrance, lined with an asiya, a hut, and a sakuno wing following the front garden. There was a vegetable field inside the house, surrounded by earthen walls and tree fences.

Mikio Oshima
Oshima family 15th generation

In October 2017, the main building (Oshima Family Housing Main Building) was registered as a tangible cultural property registered as a country.
I would like to thank Dr. Masaru Wada of the Shinano Institute of Traditional Architecture for his guidance and cooperation in registering, as well as the people in charge of cultural properties at the Agency for Cultural Affairs, Nagano Prefecture and Matsumoto City.
On the 25th of the last Edo period in Ansei 4 (1857 AD), the Oshima family house with a main building was completed on Matsumoto, Shinshu on February 25 in Oyasuyoshi. It is reported that the construction of a new house started by the ninth generation of the Oshima family, Tomo Shichitoshi Oshima, was succeeded by the tenth generation Gohichiro Oshima after the death of Tomo Shichiri, and was completed after 10 years.
The main building is known as a private house architecture unique to Shinshu, but one of its features is its gentle sloped gable roof. The beauty of the appearance is just as magnificent and personal as "a large eagle is spreading its wings."
In 1975, my grandfather died, and for various reasons, I have been trying to maintain this old house as an empty house. In 2013, the Oshima Family Residence was named “Shinshu Matsumoto NANGAIKAN,” and decided to open it to citizens to use it as a place for local communities.
Since then, we have held various concerts, vaudeville, various exhibitions, seminars and so on. In addition, it can be used for your hobby circle activities and company training.
If you wish to visit an old private house, please do not hesitate to apply. Including the main building with the main building, the garden in the mansion is a place where visitors can heal by blooming seasonal flowers.
We sincerely welcome you to visit the Shinshu Matsumoto NANGAIKAN, which has been inherited from ancestors and has the scent of Shinshu's lifestyle.
